In late March 2025, Investigo was commissioned to conduct a comprehensive confined space inspection and crack mapping of a post-tensioned bridge located in Perth, Scotland. This inspection, undertaken in collaboration with SWECO UK, was part of an ongoing effort by Perth & Kinross Council to maintain the safety and integrity of its infrastructure. The post-tensioned bridge, crucial to local transport networks, required a detailed assessment to monitor its condition and identify any signs of deterioration or structural issues that could compromise its longevity.
Scope of Work:
Investigo’s role involved deploying a highly trained confined space inspection team, equipped with all the necessary safety measures, including a standby rescue team to ensure a safe working environment. The inspection required access to the bridge’s internal deck cells, which were safely reached through manholes located on the footpath of the structure. Using a tripod and winch system, the team was able to navigate and conduct the inspection within these confined spaces efficiently.
Throughout the process, Investigo conducted detailed crack mapping to identify and document any visible defects. This thorough analysis uncovered several issues of concern, which were promptly communicated to the client. As a result, the scope of the project was rapidly expanded to include borescope surveys of key defects to further investigate the potential underlying causes and assess the severity of the damage.
Key Achievements:
- Enhanced Inspection Scope: By identifying critical defects early on, Investigo enabled Perth & Kinross Council to expand the inspection’s scope and gain deeper insights into the bridge’s structural condition. The use of borescope technology allowed for a non-invasive, detailed assessment of high-risk areas that might have otherwise been overlooked.
- Safe and Efficient Execution: With a confined space entry approach using a tripod and winch, Investigo ensured all work was carried out safely, following rigorous industry standards. The standby rescue team provided an additional layer of safety, meeting all operational requirements for high-risk work in confined environments.
- Rapid Reporting: Following the inspection, Investigo delivered a detailed yet concise inspection report within several working days. This rapid turnaround ensured that Perth & Kinross Council could promptly assess the findings and make informed decisions regarding any necessary repairs or further investigations to address the identified issues.
Outcome:
The project was completed successfully, with Perth & Kinross Council receiving critical data to make timely decisions on the bridge’s maintenance. The rapid inspection report helped the client plan for immediate remediation and future preventive measures, ensuring the bridge would continue to serve its purpose safely for years to come.
Investigo’s ability to conduct thorough, high-quality inspections under challenging conditions—combined with our quick response and expert recommendations—proved invaluable in helping the council safeguard the integrity of this key piece of infrastructure.
